Checking Your Tyres
The UK legal limit for tread on your vehicle’s tyres is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. However, many manufacturers recommend that tyres are changed around the 3mm mark, as this is the point at which tread wear can begin to have an significant adverse impact on road grip and stopping distances. In fact, when travelling at 50mph in wet weather, a car with 3mm of tread can stop up to two car lengths sooner (8m) than a car with tyre tread at the minimum legal limit of 1.6mm.

A quick and easy way to determine if your tyre tread is running below the legal limit is to do the 20p test!
- Insert 20p into the lowest tread depth on your tyres.
- If the inside edge of the coin cannot be seen, the tyres has a depth of at least 3mm and is safe.
- If the inside edge of the coin is visible, the tyre tread depth is less than 3mm we’d recommend that you get it checked by one of our experts.
These days, all tyre manufacturers build a Tread Wear Indicators into the groove of the tyre. When the indicator is flush with the tread with the tyre, you know it’s time to get them checked.
